This unit borders Mexico at Douglas and stretches north about 70 miles. Desert mule deer, Coues deer and pronghorn antelope live on a mixture of public and private lands. Most of the terrain is flat, but some mountain ranges rise several thousand feet above the flatlands.

Private land and illegal immigration are issues that hunters must face. To hunt several areas, hunters should arrange for permission to hunt on or cross private property. Illegal immigrants and drug traffickers can make camping risky.

Lower elevations are grasslands with washes. Small, isolated mountain ranges have draws and canyons.

Pinyon pines, oak brush and junipers grow in the mountains. Middle elevation land is covered with brush and grass. The low elevations are Chihuahuan desert with cactus, creosote, desert scrub and grass.

The unit is a mixture of private, state and federal land. Access at low elevations can be difficult because of private land. Hunters should arrange for permission to hunt on or cross private land in some areas. Dos Cabezas Wilderness and Whitmore Wilderness Study Area are closed to vehicles.

Remote camping is allowed on public lands within the unit, but illegal immigrants and drug traffickers can create problems, such as theft and vandalism of camps and vehicles. Most problems occur at low elevations on flat land. Motels are in Willcox, Douglas, Portal, Sunizona and Rodeo, New Mexico.
