Quick Tips

  • Understand that most state land cannot be hunted without permission from landowners
  • Some outfitters might supply access rights to private ranchland
  • Respect landowners by leaving gates as you found them
  • Encourage others to take their trash with them
  • Dove and quail seasons are open at times

On The Ground

Prescott is at the southern tip of this unit, which runs about 50 miles north to US Interstate 40, between Ash Fork and Seligman. Mule deer, elk and antelope inhabit this unit.

A large portion of the unit is privately held. Recently, several landowners have closed access to their land because they felt that some of the visitors have not shown the proper respect. Arrange for permission to access private ground before applying for tags. Elk and mule deer taken here are usually of average quality, while some trophy size antelope are available. Elk season offers hunting opportunities, but few hunters take bulls because most elk migrate from neighboring units.

Terrain

Relatively easy terrain with a few mesas, valleys, canyons, and small mountains. Hunting is not typically strenuous.

  • Roughly 763 square miles

  • 38.9% public land

  • Elevations from 4,360 feet in Big Chino Wash to 7,168 feet on Picacho Butte

Mainly high desert grassland valleys, bordered by mesas covered with pinyon pines and junipers.

The Prescott National Forest across two parts of Unit 19B have good public access on dirt roads. More than half of the unit is composed of private and state sections in a checkerboard pattern, and a large area southwest of Ash Fork is 100% deeded ground.

  • ATVs are not necessary

  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended in bad weather

  • Private land limits access and frustrates some hunters

  • Get permission to hunt on private land before applying for tags

Hunters camp on public land. Prescott, Seligman and Ash Fork have lodging and KOA campgrounds.
