On The Ground

Desert bighorn sheep and a few mule deer roam this open, dry, rocky desert unit, which borders Nevada south of Hoover Dam along the Colorado River and Lake Mohave. Much of the unit is inside Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which is open to hunting. Hunters often take day hikes from motor vehicles.

There are few mule deer in this unit. Most hunters go to other units which means less hunting pressure and more opportunity for the few deer in this unit to grow to maturity. This unit is divided into two desert sheep units: 15C North and 15C South.

Terrain

The steep, rocky Black Mountains comprise most of this open desert unit. The spine of the range parallels the Colorado River/Lake Mohave about six to nine miles inland.

  • Roughly 789 square miles

  • 80.6% public land

  • Elevations from 700 to 5,460-foot at Mount Perkins

  • Low desert mountains and drainages

  • Mostly rocky, dry, flat land

  • The Colorado River and Lake Mohave is the western border

Cactus, yucca and Mohave desert scrub such as creosote grow in lowlands. Middle to high elevations are several varieties of browse, weeds, yucca and cactus. Terrain is very open.

Most of the unit is open to the public and is managed by the BLM and the National Park Service. Lake Mead National Recreation Area comprises much of the unit and is open to hunting.

  • No off-road driving allowed in Lake Mead National Recreation Area

  • Dirt roads provide good access into much of the unit

  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended

  • Some private land in the east mixes with public land in a checkerboard pattern

  • Some terrain is remote and rugged

Most hunters camp along dirt roads on BLM property. Campers are restricted to designated areas in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Blake Ranch, Golden Valley and Fort Beale RV parks and several motels are in Kingman, Bullhead City, Boulder City, Nevada, and Laughlin, Nevada. Canyon Trail, Lake Mead and Boulder Oaks RV parks and several motels are in Boulder City, Nevada. Developed campgrounds are at Katherine Landings and Davis Camp near Highway 68.
