On The Ground
The southern extension of the Grand Wash Cliffs and bordering the Hualapai Indian Reservation, this unit is comprised of desert scrub and pinyon/juniper forest in the Music Mountains. The land is arid and hunting pressure from locals can be high. Elk and mule deer numbers are low. The state issues a small number of desert sheep tags for hunting here.
Elk hunting is challenging because elk numbers are low, but there are still some quality bulls. This unit also has low numbers of mule deer as well as antelope with both archery and muzzleloader antelope seasons. This unit is known to be mentally draining due to the amount of work required to find a mature buck.
Terrain
Music Mountains comprise most of the unit.
Roughly 521 square miles
80.2% public land
Elevations from 1,490 near Lake Mead to 6,700 feet near Hualapai Reservation
Drainages and canyons in Music Mountains
Desert terrain in lower elevations
Vegetation
Lower elevations are rocky canyons and desert lowlands with cactus and sagebrush. Middle to high elevations are brush and cactus with pinyon/juniper forests and cliffrose.
Access
Most land is open to the public and is managed by the BLM and the National Park Service, which allows hunting on Lake Mead National Recreation Area but prohibits motor vehicles from leaving roads. Some parts of the unit are better accessed through Hualapai Reservation, but get permission before crossing tribal land. Due to an access agreement between the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Hualapai Tribe, hunters can gain access to the Unit 15A portion of the Music Mountains from the Buck and Doe Road on the Reservation.
ATVs can be a benefit in wet weather and on primitive roads
Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended
In late season snow can fall, limiting access
Camping and Lodging
There are no developed campgrounds in this unit. Most hunters camp along dirt roads. Lodging is in Kingman, Truxton and Meadview. South Cove RV Resort is in the north part of the unit near Lake Mead.
