Arizona produces some of the biggest mule deer in the west with premium units regularly producing bucks that exceed 190" Boone and Crockett. Hunters must apply for many years to draw some tags, but tags in some units can be drawn regularly. Some units have been identified as trophy areas and the Arizona Game and Fish Department manages to produce older bucks and high buck-to-doe ratios. Winterkill is rarely an issue, but droughts often harm deer herds and negatively impact antler growth. In many units hunters have plenty of options and can choose among seasons for archery, muzzleloader or any weapon. Tags for rifle seasons during the rut are generally hard to draw.
