  • Bear fences can be a good idea for camps
  • Rain gear is a necessity

On The Ground

This large unit is found in northern Alaska along the Arctic Ocean. This area generally experiences great caribou hunting opportunities and hunters can expect good trophy qualities. A number of outfitters operate in this area and can provide good options when choosing your own hunt. The southern half of the unit is highly mountainous and comprised of the northern face of the Brooks Range. The northern half of the unit is almost entirely tundra, tussock, and small berry bushes. Great glassing opportunities will be found throughout this area.

There are a number of air services for this area and hunters can find great options for access. Additionally, a large amount of outfitters operate in this unit and can provide great hunting experiences.

Terrain

The southern end of this unit will see a very jagged composition of mountains with little to no vegetation outside of tundra and occasional willow patches in creek bottoms. Great animal populations can be found here but the hunting will be physically demanding. The remainder of the under is largely composed of tundra that can be difficult to traverse but will allow for excellent glassing opportunities.

  • Roughly 10,997 square miles

  • 70% Public land

  • Elevations range from 0-8,000 feet

Because this area is primarily tundra hunters will find very little in a diversity of vegetation. Tussock, wildflowers, berry bushes, scattered willow, and tundra are about what hunters can expect.

This unit is entirely remote and hunters will need to be flown into the unit. Once in the unit hunters will have the option to either be dropped off at a river for a float hunt or to simply hike out from a drop off point. Typically air taxi services can be found in Fairbanks or Cold Foot. Great float hunting options can generally be found on the Hulahula, Canning, and Kongakut Rivers.

Because this is a true wilderness hunt hunters will be relegated to primitive camping options whether they are float hunting or camping near airstrips.
