This large unit is found is west-central Alaska and is bisected by the famed Yukon River. With the exception of a few towns and communities along the Yukon this area is largely remote and access into hunting areas will need to be carefully planned. This region experiences a healthy mixture of timbered slopes, open tundra, and marshy wetlands. Hunters can find great hunting and glassing opportunities with the biggest struggle for most simply lying with transportation in and out of the unit.

The logistics of reaching this unit can be steep but the reward can be excellent with great hunting opportunities and miles and miles of remote country. Excellent drop hunt opportunities can be found here for moose but outfitters tend to fill up fast and hunters need to plan for this in advance.

This area is very typical of what is found in most of this region. The Yukon River bisects the unit is an east to west pattern and miles of mountainous and marshy lands comprise the rest. The mountainous areas can be heavily timbered at times, particularly around river and creek bottoms, but large portions of these areas will also be heavily covered in tundra and generally easy to glass. Ridge tops tend to be mostly void of any large vegetation and make for excellent glassing points. Among the mountain ranges are large and expansive wetlands comprised of bogs, marshes, and muskegs. These locations are heavily laden in small ponds, lakes, and creeks. Timber and ground cover can grow very thick at times but much of this country is fairly open to glassable from the right locations.

Most of the lower-lying country is comprised of a healthy mixture of muskeg bogs, dense timber stands, and heavy patches of ground cover. Timber patches can grow very thick at times, generally along river banks and foothill areas, and are generally composed of spruce, birch, aspen, and dwarf birch. Muskegs will see small scatterings of timber but will generally experience a larger mixture of grasses, alder, willow, dwarf birch, and aspen. Some of the higher elevation areas will see a greater makeup up tundra and berry bushes along with rocky ridge tops.

Some hunting opportunities can be found along the Yukon but most of this area is primarily native-owned lands and opportunities will be slim. Most hunters will generally choose to be flown into more remote locations or float hunt. The Koyukuk River is a common river for hunting and can be ran in a prop or jet boat although jets are recommended for tributaries.

Some lodging options can be found in the small towns and communities along the Yukon River but very few hunting opportunities will exist in close proximity to these locations. Instead, most hunters in the unit will generally need to use primitive camping techniques while in the bush.
