Quick Tips

  • Plan your transportation and lodging options around the season and species you will be hunting
  • Bear fences can be a good idea for camps
  • Rain gear is a necessity
  • Waders or hip boots are highly recommended when hunting marshy areas

On The Ground

This large unit is found in southwestern Alaska and is largely remote with only a handful of small communities located along some of the many rivers. Because of the remoteness, access options will be very limited, primarily to small boats or planes, and simply reaching the unit can be a challenge. Good hunting opportunities can be found here, especially for black and brown bears, and careful planning can land hunters with a great hunt. The terrain and vegetation are fairly open with small strips of timber and heavy vegetation along creek beds and drainages. Overall, glassing opportunities are good here and hunters will be able to use this tactic for locating game in most areas.

This unit offers good hunting opportunities, but the logistics of reaching hunting areas can be tough. Many nonresidents may opt for different units.

Terrain

The majority of this unit consists of expansive tundra and muskeg. Large river channels and creek bottoms braid their way throughout the unit and create a diverse terrain type. Small island mountain ranges exist throughout the area and provide great opportunities for long-distance glassing. The areas around creeks, streams, and rivers can see a heavy density of vegetation which can impede travel to some extent, however, these areas can be fairly easy to circumvent. The western and northern ends of the unit see a higher distribution of mountainous areas along with a collection of huge lakes on the western side.

  • Roughly 9,776 square miles

  • 95% Public land

  • Elevations range from 0-4,100 feet

The large majority of this unit is comprised of expansive tundra heavily laden in berry bushes and small scatterings of timber. Areas around stream and river beds can be heavily vegetated in willow and alder making it very difficult to navigate through. Higher elevations hold a very similar distribution of plants along with patches of native grasses. Most of the highest elevation areas and peaks will see large rock fields and cliff faces.

Due to the location of this unit, access options are primarily limited to a plane, both into the unit and into hunting areas. A few float hunt options can be found throughout the unit but gear will need to be shipped into a hub town and then flown into the hunting location. Because of this remoteness, hunting will need to be conducted in close proximity to camping locations or near rivers when floating.

  • Good float hunting options found on the Chlikadronta, King Slamon, Koktuli, Mulchatna, Nushagak, and Stuyahok Rivers

There are very few options available for modern lodging here. Because the unit is so remote, many hunters will be forced into primitive camping options. This area sees a heavy brown bear presence so the use of bear fences around camping locations is highly recommended.
