This smaller unit is found on the Kenai Peninsula and lies just south of Anchorage. The southern end of this unit is fairly developed with the large towns of Sterling, Soldotna, and Kenai located in close proximity. A good road system will lead hunters throughout the unit but will add obvious increases in hunting pressure. This unit is almost entirely comprised of large boggy and marshy areas, though a small collection of steep mountain ridges are available on the eastern edge of the unit. A large majority of this unit is composed of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge but is open to hunting.

With a healthy road system and several large towns and cities within close proximity, this unit can see fair amounts of pressure at times. Good access options exist for hunting remote areas.

This area sees very little in the form of terrain change; gaining good vantage points for any type of glassing can be a major chore. Most of this area will be comprised of mature stands of timber and a huge amount on ponds, lakes, and bogs. Traveling cross country can be heavily impeded by water, hunters will need to formulate strong hunting plans before heading out. Waders and hip boots are highly recommended for most of this area. The eastern edge of the unit sees a few large and steep ridgelines that can provide some access to high elevation areas. The lower elevations around these mountains will be heavily timbered -treeline will generally be found around 1,500 feet. The upper reaches of these areas will be mostly void of large vegetation and glassing opportunities will be great.

Most of the low lying areas hold spruce, birch, and aspen stands intermixed among meadows and bogs of native grasses, alder, dwarf birch, and willows. Most of the meadow areas are peatlands comprised of wetland tundra. Most of the lakes and ponds in the area are connected through outlet streams in some way to the ocean and migrating fish oftentimes find their way inland. Higher elevation areas above the treeline are generally composed of tundra, mountain hemlock, and crowberry. The highest elevations will generally see a heavy presence of rock and snowfields.

Because this area houses such an extensive road system, vehicle access into many hunting locations is pretty straight forward. Established trails exist in the high country areas making for good foot access as well. Many hunters will rent vehicles once landing in Anchorage and simply drive to the unit. The Swanson River Canoe Trails area in the central portion of the unit provides a unique experience for hunters but some steps will be needed to escape pressure. Several portages will be necessary throughout this area and hunters will need to account for these. Using the canoe area will put hunters in close proximity to lakes and ponds that receive very few, if any, visitors throughout the year and careful planning can lead to some good hunting. Many oil and gas roads are found throughout the region and may or may not be accessible to hunters.

There are several options for modern lodging throughout the southern region of the unit, as well as one USFS cabin available for rent. Depending on the hunt, many hunters will opt for primitive camping methods in the bush.
