A unique deer species, the Sitka Blacktail Deer, is found in Southeast Alaska and can provide an incredibly fun hunting opportunity. These short and stocky deer are found in great numbers throughout the many hunting areas and tags are widely available. All of the tags are available as over the counter options for both residents and nonresidents.
Earlier in the season Sitka Blacktails are largely hunted in high alpine areas but later in the year, and closer to the rut, small herds will be found in lower elevation areas and along coastlines. Many hunters will opt to hunt road systems or camp in the bush but boat hunting off large houseboats is a very popular, and fun, option.
Sitka Blacktail hunting is one of the cheapest hunt available to nonresidents in Alaska and can be an excellent consideration for anyone.
