One of the more exotic opportunities for species in Alaska will be found with Muskox. These ancient animals were once heavily prevalent in Alaska but had completely disappeared byt he 1920s. In 1930, 34 muskox were transplanted from Greenland to Nunivak Island in Alaska. Since then the animals have been translocated to other portions of the state and by 2000 there was an estimated 4,000 muskox in the state.
Draw odds are steep for muskox hunts and physically reaching the hunting areas can be very expensive. Still, thousands of hunters toss their names into the hat each year hoping for a small opportunity to chase these incredible animals.
Evidence of sex must remain attached naturally to the meat
Residents must purchase a locking tag for Muskox although the fees are greatly reduced for registration hunts
Guides are NOT required for nonresident Muskox hunters but the use of guides is a necessity
Draw Permits and Registration Permits are available for Muskox
Residents need to purchase locking tags for hunting muskox
In addition to their hunting license, nonresidents will also need to purchase a locking tag for every species as well as acquire harvest tickets if applicable
