One of the most sought after animals in Alaska, Dall Sheep offer challenging hunting conditions and the adventure of a lifetime. Nonresident hunters are required to be accompanied by a guide of next or kin Alaskan residents when hunting sheep. Great trophy potentials can be found statewide although a few units do offer better rams and lower hunter numbers.
General tags can be picked up in a number of units and can provide excellent opportunities, particularly for residents. Horn length and age restrictions are very exact and hunters need to be very aware of their particular GMU’s requirements when in the field.
Dall sheep generally inhabit breathtaking country not of the norm for most of the other species in the state and will certainly test hunters both mentally and physically.
Rams taken in Units 7, 9, 11-16, 19, 20, and 24 and those with horn restrictions in 23, 25, and 26 must be sealed.
Horns must be sealed within 30 days of kill
Some units require a guide agreement prior to applying
Guides or resident next of kin ARE required for nonresident Dall Sheep hunters
General hunts, Draw Permits, and Registration Permits are available for Dall Sheep
Along with a hunting license, most General Dall Sheep hunts only require a Harvest Ticket which is available for free.
Residents need to simply purchase a hunting license and then their free harvest ticket to hunt Dall Sheep in most general units
In addition to their hunting license, nonresidents will also need to purchase a locking tag for every species as well as acquire harvest tickets if applicable
