Alaska is well known for its Brown/Grizzly bear hunting, and for good reasoning. Bears along coastal areas are fed an incredible diet of fat-rich fish and can grow to world record sizes. Brown/Grizzly Bears are found nearly statewide and some great hunting opportunities are available. Seasons are generally available for both the spring and fall seasons with pros and cons to both.
Nonresidents will be relegated to the use of outfitters while residents have some great DIY options to consider. Many hunters will make trips particularly targeting brown bears but opportunities can also exist when hunting other species such as moose, caribou, or sheep.
Hunters can find exceptional spring bear opportunities along with some of the other fantastic recreational activities to be had at that time of the year. Fall seasons generally see lower harvest numbers but good hunting conditions can still be had.
Baiting is legal in many units and is a very popular method among local residents and outfitters.
