On The Ground

This area is made up of scenic mountains located in the Caribou Targhee National Forest on the western edge of the state. Bordered by Idaho on the west and Yellowstone National Park to the north, this unit contains much public land and includes some wilderness area.

This is a rugged and remote area with most of the sheep located on the west side of the Teton Mountain Range. This is possibly the toughest area to hunt in the state. Good rams can be found with hard work. Sheep move between Nation Park and National Forest lands. Grizzly bears can be found here.

Terrain

This unit spans from the valley floor and river bottom on the east, westward across the Snake River and Teton Mountain Ranges and ends in the foothills on the Idaho state line. The area is very steep and rugged, with timberline found at 10,000 feet. Thick timbered foothills quickly turn to rugged alpine ridges, basins and towering granite crags.

  • Roughly 698 square miles

  • 93% public land

  • Elevations from 5,600-13,700 feet

Wilderness

Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.

  • 50.2% Wilderness

The country near timberline consists of thick spruce and fir forests with grassy meadows on south facing slopes. Large rocky scree fields are commonly found here and the lack of trails can make hiking difficult. Sheep feed on a variety of bunch grasses in the alpine basins. Douglas fir and aspen can be found at middle elevations.

Public access to sheep country in this unit is good on the west side and the area has well-maintained roads and trails. The eastern side of the mountain range is difficult to access and even though there are a few trails, be prepared to bushwhack into sheep country. Boat access in this area can be found across Jackson Lake.

  • Fox Creek Road, Teton Canyon Road and Darby Creek Road are main access roads leading to trail heads

Driggs offers many options for lodging including the Best Western, Super 8, The Pines and Teton Valley Cabins. Groceries, gas, and other amenities can also be found in Driggs. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. There are lots of designated campgrounds located throughout the unit, but hunters can also camp in remote locations.

  • Coal Creek and Teton Canyon are public campgrounds
