On The Ground
This hunt area is comprised of sparsely timbered foothills and low mountains located in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and the Laramie Peak Wildlife Habitat Management Area in the southeast corner of the state. The unit is comprised of a mix of National Forest, BLM and private land.
One of the best areas in the state. Sheep are concentrated in this unit in an area west of Wheatland. Transplants from Montana's famed Missouri River Breaks have added some incredible genetics here. Genetically, the herd is diverse, healthy and growing.
Terrain
This is a huge unit with the sheep concentrated in a small portion of it. The area spans from the valley floor of the North Platte River near the towns of Chugwater and Wheatland, west across the Laramie Mountains to the high desert of Shirley Basin. The Laramie Peak Wildlife Habitat Management Area consists of open grassland, Ponderosa forest and rocky outcrops.
Roughly 5,499 square miles
30% public land
Elevations from 4,600-9,400 feet
Vegetation
Where the sheep are concentrated, a variety of vegetative types exist. Grasslands cover much of the land, with ponderosa pine, limber pine and junipers mixed in. Wet meadows make up most of the remainder of the vegetation. Recent burns have helped the habitat.
Access
Public access in this unit is good, but access to the sheep may be difficult. Pressure can push them off public land and onto private. There are private land tracts mixed with public lands. This along with the rough terrain, makes it difficult for hunters to determine their exact location. Be sure to carry a GPS unit with land ownership. Discerning boundaries without it is tough. Access is primarily on County Roads 721 or 727. Paying trespass fees is common for accessing the best sheep.
ATVs may be useful but not necessary
Camping and Lodging
Wheatland is the closest town to access sheep hunting, and offers many options for lodging. Some motels in Wheatland are the Wyoming Motel, Super 8, Best Western and Parkway Motels. Groceries, gas, and other amenities are available as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. There are several designated campgrounds located throughout the unit.
Arrowhead RV Park, Camp Paradise, A Ok RV Park and Kamp Dakota Campground and Guest Ranch are nearby public campgrounds
