On The Ground
Made up of National Forest in the Bighorn Mountains and some high plains desert, in the north-central part of the state, this unit has a lot of public land. It is bordered by the Montana State Line on the north, the Sheep Mountain Road on the east, U.S. Highway 14-A on the south and the Bighorn River on the west.
There is a lot of moderate and rugged terrain with elk found mainly on National Forest land. The bigger elk typically come from the more rugged and remote locations in the Devil Canyon area.
Terrain
This area has a lot of mountainous elk habitat with timbered ridges and deep, grassy valleys. The terrain gradually gets rougher as elevations drop into deep canyons. There are some roadless areas in this area for those willing to hike and hunters should be prepared physically for this unit.
Roughly 230 square miles
90% public land
Elevations from 3,700-9,800 feet
Vegetation
Most of the vegetation here is made up of forest areas, willow-filled creek bottoms, grassland and sagebrush. Pockets of aspen can be found throughout the unit.
Access
forest roads. Most roads here are in good shape, but a few are passable only with four-wheel drive or ATVs. Packing in with horses or backpack hunting is possible, but day hunts are more common here.
Camping and Lodging
Sheridan is the nearest town, and has several lodging options. Grocery stores, gas stations and other amenities are also available. Camping is allowed on all public land for up to 16 days in one location. Most hunters camp near the forest roads. Five Springs and Porcupine Falls are both public campgrounds.
