Unit 40 is located south of Ten Sleep. A small portion of Bighorn National Forest is included in this unit, as well as BLM and state land. Mule deer and whitetails are both found in the unit. Public land access can be tough.For nonresidents, this area is part of Region M and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 35, 39, 164.

Mule deer can be found throughout the entire unit, and whitetail are mostly found in lower elevations. Whitetail bucks can be found in the Norwood River bottoms and drainages that come from the eastern foothills to the river.

The lower elevations are made up of sagebrush flats and deep cuts with agriculture land mixed in. As you move up in elevation, you get into rocky, steep canyons, long drainages and rocky bluffs.

It can be hard to access public land in this area. Maps showing land ownership will be critical in deciphering public from private ground. A number of public roads are found throughout the unit and will provide the main method of access. You cannot cross private property on a non-public road to access the public ground. An ATV would be handy for faster travel.

Lower elevations have sagebrush flats, prairie grasses and agriculture fields. As you gain elevation you will find ponderosa pine and juniper pockets. Hardwoods and willows can be found along creek bottoms.

Ten Sleep, north of the unit, has camping, motels, gas stations and basic groceries. Worland and Thermopolis are a short drive from Ten Sleep and have a lot more options for lodging, meals and services. BLM camping is also permitted.
