On The Ground

This area is located southeast of Buffalo in Region C. This area has lots of sagebrush flats, rolling grass ridges and open prairies available to hunters. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region C and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 17, 18, 19, 23, 26, 31

Area 29 is not a trophy area and public access is very difficult. Many of the ranches in the area are leased to outfitters, but a list of ranches with access or trophy fees is available at the Sport's Lure. This is a low-density mule deer unit, but some quality bucks can still be found.

Terrain

This area requires a lot of hiking and traveling from valley to valley in order to find deer. The areas nearest to the Powder River are steeper and harder to climb than areas on the east side.

  • Roughly 1,003 square miles

  • 20.1% public land

  • Elevations from 3,931 – 5,382 feet

The tops of buttes and ridges are wind blown with light grass and rocks that recede into sagebrush. Mixed grasses and prickly pear cactus are also common throughout the unit.

Public access is very limited and most of the state and BLM on the north side can be accessed from Schoonover Road and Sussex Road on the south side. While there are significant amounts of BLM along the northern border along I-90, parking along the Interstate is not allowed. Having a GPS with mapping software is recommended.

  • ATVs are not needed, but can be helpful in difficult weather

  • Most county roads are well maintained

  • Snow and rain can eliminate access to some areas

Buffalo is the nearest city with accommodations like hotels, restaurants, gas stations and some grocery stores. Camping on State land is prohibited, but hunters can camp on BLM in a specific location for up to 14 days within any 28-day period. Kaycee on the South end has a grocery store and a gas station, but no accommodations.
