On The Ground
This unit is northeast of Douglas and has parts of Thunder Basin National Grasslands, BLM land and state and private land inside of it. Mule deer and whitetail are commonly found here, but complex land ownership makes it hard to access public land. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region B and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 21.
Terrain
The North Platte River drains the southern parts of the area here. In the northern portion, most creeks drain into Lightning Creek. Ridges are scattered throughout the area, but grasslands make up the majority of the landscape.
Roughly 971 square miles
15.4% public land
Elevations from 4,298-5,365 feet
Vegetation
High prairie grassland is made up of buffalo, blue grama and sagebrush flats. Cottonwoods and willows can be found near the creek and river bottoms, and juniper and ponderosa pines can be found on ridges and hillsides.
Access
Part of the Thunder Basin National Grasslands have thousands of acres of public land. Use a good map to become familiar with roads leading to state and federal lands. County and secondary roads can get hard to navigate in rain or heavy snow. Four-wheel-drive is recommended. Be prepared for long hikes on public land.
Camping and Lodging
Hunters can camp on Thunder Basin National Grasslands and BLM land. Douglas and Lusk have motels, RV campgrounds, restaurants, cafes, medical facilities and gas stations.
