Quick Tips

  • GPS, Maps, or a compass are highly recommended
  • Be mindful of grizzlies in this unit

On The Ground

This unit is located in the northwestern portion of the state between Jackson and Alpine, east of State Highway 26. Heavy timber growth can be encountered in the lower elevations but hunters who put in the effort to reach the highcountry will be rewarded with excelletn views.

Good bear numbers can be found here, especially once the highcountry basins have melted off and grasses have begun to grow.

Terrain

This unit is located in what is known as The Palisades. Next to the Tetons, these are arguably some of the most beautiful and rugged mountains Wyoming has. As soon as you leave the Snake River, you immediately start gaining elevation, and you gain it quick. There are some amazing alpine basins in these mountains.

  • Roughly 279 square miles

  • 92% public land

  • Elevations range from 5,500-10,900 feet

The mountains in this unit are your typical timber covered ridges with open meadows scattered throughout. Once above timberline, you are going to find what you would typically think of in an alpine environment -big basins with bald rocky mountain peaks. Like all mountains in Wyoming, you will find lodgepole pines, white pines, juniper and aspen trees throughout the range.

Access in this area is great although hunters will find that physically reaching desired hunting areas can be a chore due to the terrain.

  • Maps, GPS, and a compass should be used by anyone

Jackson is about the only nearby town where you will be able to get provisions. There are other little towns scattered throughout this area, but there is only one place with a grocery store. When looking for hotels, Jackson is also going to be just about your only option. As for camping, there are quite a few campgrounds in and around Jackson, but keep in mind that most are not open year-round, so try contacting the Forest Service office to see if they are open beforehand.

  • Jackson is your go to town for hotels and food

  • Check with campgrounds to ensure they are open
