On The Ground
Unit 51, also referred to as Big Creek is located on the southern border of the state, southeast of Encampment. Made up of high plain desert and part of the Medicine Bow Mountain Range, this area a lot of BLM and state land, as well as a good portion within the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests. A large majority of the public lands found in this unit will not hold any notable populations of antelope which can greatly concentrate hunting pressure in public areas where antelope are present.
Decent public access is found here but hunting pressure can be high at times. Private lands will generally hold the best odds of success as well as the biggest bucks.
Terrain
There are a lot of open prairies with large basins, creek bottoms and rolling hills that provide opportunity for stalking. There are also private ranch and farm lands that can draw antelope from the surrounding prairies. Spot and stalk techniques will work well throughout this area as well as sitting over water during warmer temps.
Roughly 318 square miles
59.1% public land
Elevations from 7,000-11,000 feet
Vegetation
Hunters can find high desert prairie and sagebrush or grasslands in this area. Rocky bluffs, sagebrush, cedars and small trees are common as the elevation climbs.
Access
Public access in this unit is good. It contains several well-maintained roads, a network of BLM and forest roads, and smaller two track roads. Most roads here are well maintained, with a few passable only with four-wheel drive or ATVs.
Camping and Lodging
Saratoga and Encampment are the closest towns to this unit and offer a lot of options for lodging. Groceries, gas and other stores can be found here as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. Hunters can camp in remote locations.
