On The Ground

Area 115, also referred to as Upper Nowood is located in the central part of the state east of Worland. Comprised of high plains desert and the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains, this unit contains expansive amounts of Forest, BLM and State lands. Good numbers of antelope are found here along with great opportunities for success.

This area has good general access to the hunting public, a large amount of public land and a high success rate for harvest.

Terrain

This area consists of a variety of grassy or desert-like open prairie, with large basins and arid terrain on the west. On the east are the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains and some deeper creek bottoms and canyons. Antelope will not inhabit most of the higher elevations so hunters can generally weed those out while e-scouting.

  • Roughly 1,009 Square miles

  • 53.7% public land

  • Elevations from 4,400–9,400 feet

Here the vegetation is high desert prairie where it is typical to be among sagebrush or grasslands. There have been wildfires in this unit that have resulted in large expansions of cheatgrass. Rocky bluffs, sagebrush, cedars and timber are to be expected as the elevation climbs into the Big Horn Mountains.

Public access in this unit is good, and the majority of the public land can be found on the west side of the unit. Much of the public land can be accessed by highways, county roads or BLM roads. Most roads are well maintained, with a few passable only with 4-wheel drive or ATVs.

Worland is the closest town of any size, and offers many options for lodging. Groceries, gas, and other amenities can be found here as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location.
