On The Ground

North River is a small little unit that produces both elk and deer hunting opportunities. It is located on the south side of Grays Harbor, from Whitcomb Flats to Aberdeen, then south along Hwy 101 to Raymond, and back up on the 105 by the Pacific Ocean. This unit is almost entirely private with typically smaller tracts, mostly owned by timber companies, however, there is some county land in the mix. While neither the elk or the blacktail deer harvest rates are extremely high, this unit does allow hunters the opportunity to go afield with the chance to punch a tag and fill the freezer.

Gaining access to private land is very important in this unit.

Terrain

This unit has rolling conifer forests that are heavily clear cut and replanted. The oldest age-class of timber are in small isolated pockets and in the deep ravines dissecting past cuts. There are some wet, marshy areas where water does not drain, along with some minor urban sprawl, along the coast.

  • Roughly 263 square miles

  • 5% public land

  • Elevations range from sea level – 600 feet

Conifer forests here are highly farmed for timber and are in various stages of regrowth. Along with the timber industries, there are a handful of small wildlife refuges, typically in the lower, wetter marshlands and tidal flats along the coast.

This unit is basically all private. Gaining permission to access private land is key to having the best hunting experience and harvest success.

  • Good road system throughout entire unit however many cross private lands and may be locked

  • If you like to stand hunt funnels and key cover to food fringes, check in with the smaller landowners and you may just find that honey hole

There is very little public camping in this unit. If you are more interested in a bed and a shower, as well as staying closer to gas stations, restaurants, and a grocery store, your best option will be local B&B’s and hotels in Aberdeen, Westport and Raymond.
