This large unit runs from the rugged Cascade Range in the east to the I-5 valley in the west, with a bit of everything in between. There are tracts of roadless, large continuous state and forest lands, and major roads right through the middle of the unit along the Skagit River drainage, and privately held lands in all sizes and shapes. If you have a preferred style of hunting, chances are you will find it within these boundaries.

Spend a lot of time scouting this unit, elk can move a long ways overnight.

This diverse GMU covers multiple habitats, elevations and human density populations. It is heavily forested in the east, with large clear cuts and farming in the west. Very steep, thick terrain in the eastern portion along Cascade River in the MT Baker National Forest significantly mellows out as it drains 50+ miles to the western border and urban sprawl. From Road 503 west, the unit has areas with timber harvest, agriculture, and rural residential properties, especially along the major road which all but surrounds the unit.

This unit has a huge mix of old growth timbered forests and large tracts of agricultural land consisting of timber, cattle, fruits, turf grass, bulb and vegetables. Several species of non-native trees, shrubs, and flowers have also been introduced.

This unit has decent public access, as well as a decent series of unimproved roads -watch for seasonal closures, though. There are also large blocks of private, so be sure to secure access early for best public access opportunities.

Primitive camping in the National Forest is allowed most of the year, but various fire bans and forest road closures may happen, so double check any restrictions or permits necessary prior to your trip. Sedro-Woolley, Arlington, and Darrington will be your best options as far as lodging and accommodations are concerned.
