On The Ground

This large unit is found in the central portion of the state and features some very rugged country. Sheep have been transplanted here in recent years and have been doing quite well. Trophy potentials are slightly lower than in most areas but hunters will be sure to have the trip of a lifetime.

Recently transplanted sheep populations are doing great in this unit.

Terrain

This unit is largely flat with the exception of a few incredibly rugged mountain ranges located near the center of the unit. Some roads can be found leading into these areas but much of the best sheep habitat will only be accessible by foot. Large cliff bands are often encountered here, particularly along the eastern face of the Canyon Mountains, and hunters will need to take proper precautions while hunting here.

  • 75% public land

  • Elevations range from 5,000 - 9,600 feet

At low elevations are sage and grassy flats with hay meadows, some private alfalfa fields and willow-lined creeks. Middle elevations consist mostly of sagebrush and grassy ridges with pinyon pines, junipers, bitterbrush, serviceberry and aspens. High elevations feature quaking aspen forests, slopes covered with pines, firs and spruce and much oak brush and chokecherry.

Most of the prime sheep habitat will consist of publically accessible lands making for plenty of access options for hunters. That being said, many of these places can be physically challenging to access and conditioning will become important before the hunt. Cliffs are very common and high country safety will be important.

Modern lodging options can be found in a few locations along I-15 but most hunters will generally opt to backpack hunt or truck camp. Groceries and a small selection of sporting goods can also be found in the various small towns along I-15 but any special needs will likely need to be met prior to leaving for the hunt.
