On The Ground

This unit is made up of the Roberts Mountains and Kobeh Valley, stretching from the town of Eureka north to the Cortez-Beowawe Road. This unit has diverse terrain for a wide variety of hunters. There are a few private land holdings and a mining operation in this unit, but it is mostly open to the public and controlled by the BLM and Forest Service.

Terrain

The terrain is greatly varied along the range with low lying valleys containing low sage and salt scrub to peaks reaching over 10,000 feet. On both sides of the range, the terrain gradually builds in elevation and reaches the highest elevations around Roberts Mountain.

  • Roughly 583 square miles

  • 97.1% public land

  • Elevations range from 6,000-10,000 feet

There are large sagebrush valleys that lead into hills covered with juniper and pinyon trees at around 6,000-7,500 feet. From around 7,500-8,500 feet it turns into open sagebrush basins with aspen pockets, along water sources and ridges lined with mahogany and rock outcroppings. Above 8,500 feet the terrain turns into vertical ridges and mountains that have large pines with steep cliffs and rock formations with large open sagebrush basins.

Public roads range from maintained gravel roads to four-wheel drive and ATV trails that lead to great starting points. Private land does not impact access.

  • Motorized travel is prohibited off of established roads within the wilderness study area located on Roberts Mountain

  • Cortez-Beowawe Road is the northern boundary, Highway 50 on the southern end, Highway 278 on the eastern side and Three Bars Road is the western Boundary

  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles and ATVs are helpful

On the southern end of the unit, the town of Eureka can be found near Highway 50, where lodging, restaurants and the main stop for fuel in this unit can be found. There a lot of great camping spots along both sides of the range that offer spots for both campers and tents. Hunters will find beautiful spots in the high country to set up spike camps to hunt
