On The Ground

Located on the Utah-Nevada border in the central part of the state, this unit is located in an isolated part of the state. This unit gives hunters a chance to harvest mature mule deer, elk and antelope.

This is a good unit for mature antelope bucks. Elk permits are also valid in neighboring units.

Terrain

Most of the unit consists of flat desert valleys leading up to foothills at the base of the Kern Mountains, the only mountain range in the unit. Off of the high points, the steep drainages and ridges end in the valley. There are a few water sources scattered throughout the unit.

  • Roughly 674 square miles

  • 81.7% public land

  • Elevations from 5,450-9,700 feet

Large, open grassy areas can be found here. Sagebrush, greasewood, fourwing saltbush and other desert plants mainly grow below 6,500 feet. Sagebrush continues up through the middle and higher elevations. Pinyon pines and juniper trees cover a lot of middle elevations. On the steep ridges, conifer forests mixed with mountain mahogany can be seen.

Maintained gravel roads leading to four-wheel drive or ATV roads are spread throughout this area. There is a large portion of the Goshute Indian Reservation in the northern part of the unit that is closed to hunting. Private property is limited, but there are some parts of private land on the Kern Mountain range.

  • ATVs recommended

This unit is isolated and does not have many towns that offer supplies anywhere near it. Most hunters will camp near the unit on public land, as there are a lot of different areas to camp. Hunters can also get motel rooms and general supplies in Ely, but it is farther south of the unit.
