On The Ground

This district is commonly called Lower Rock Creek and is directly south of Interstate 90, just east of Missoula. The sheep are generally located on National Forest land until November when they come down for the rut. It is a mountainous area with numerous peaks and lots of pockets of timber.

Historically this district was known for having great rams, but the sheep are struggling in this district and are on the downward trend. The good news is there is still some good older age class rams, but little to no recruitment.

Terrain

This district has mountainous terrain with numerous peaks and ridges scattered throughout. Much of the area is covered with talus slopes and rocky ridges. A lot of this district is very steep and requires extensive hiking to access and hunt.

  • Roughly 159 square miles

  • 84.7% public land

  • Elevations from 4,500-6,900 feet

The district has a lot of pockets of timber for the sheep to hide in. The timber is mostly pine, fir and some spruce. Most of the slopes have a lot of open country that is mainly grasses and forbs. The sheep spend the days in the timber and come out to the openings to graze late in the evening and are still out first thing in the morning. Some of the open basins are quite lush in the bottoms.

The main access is off Interstate 90 onto the Rock Creek Road that runs way into the district. There is also a road from Interstate 90 into Beavertail Hill State Park that accesses back into the district. There are numerous hiking trails throughout the district.

There are numerous places to camp throughout this district. There is a campground in the state park. It is possible to camp at the trailheads and day hunt this district or backpack into some of the remote areas and camp in sheep country. It is also possible to stay at a motel in Drummond or Missoula and commute to the district and day hunt.
