Quick Tips
- Spend the time and locate a good bull, this is a good unit with good quality
- Bring good optics, maps displaying land ownership, and equipment to get a moose out as soon as possible
- Be bear aware as this unit is adjacent to known grizzly bear habitat and pack bear spray, just in case
On The Ground
This unit is located in southwest Montana, just south of Dillon and has very open country with no national forest lands. Clark Canyon Reservoir sits on the west edge of the unit and has excellent fishing.
This unit has a very good moose population and good quality bulls, capable of reaching the mid 40” class and occasionally pushing 50”. Moose numbers are stable with good recruitment. Harvest in the past has been near 100% success.
Terrain
The main drainage is Blacktail Creek running the length of the unit. Most slopes in this unit are relatively gentle slopes for good hiking with lots of open country. The unit is very broken with lots of drainages and irregular topography. There really is no real steep topography in this unit compared to the other units adjacent to it.

Vegetation
A majority of this unit is very open country of grass and sagebrush with lots of pockets of willow and aspen scattered throughout. Very high quality browse for moose. The streams have a good riparian area of willow and shrubs along their corridors. There is some mountain mahogany at the upper elevations.
Access
A majority of the unit is BLM or DNRC lands including the Blacktail Wildlife Management unit. The private land in the upper Blacktail is mostly in Block Management. The lower Blacktail has a very large private ranch, the Matador Ranch and access could be difficult. There is plenty of public ground to hunt. There are numerous roads throughout the unit.
There are numerous places to camp in the unit on public ground and there are also public campgrounds in the unit. Clark Canyon Reservoir is on the west edge of this unit with good fishing and campgrounds. Dillon has several gas stations, restaurants and motels
