On The Ground
This largely forested hunting district has some extremely rugged peaks. The Great Northern Mountain gives a stunning view from Idaho to Glacier National Park. This hunting district is located along the Hungry Horse Reservoir and South Fork Flathead River.
A backcountry hunter can get away from crowds and hunt unpressured animals. There are relatively low number of elk in this area when compared to other areas in the state, and a high number of wolves.
Terrain
Terrain varies from high subalpine fir meadows to lower alder brush fields and thick forests. Lots of thick timbered country. Streams can usually be flowing throughout the year.
Roughly 791 Square miles
93.3% public land
Elevations from 3,000-8,700 feet
Vegetation
Classic western Montana hunting district. Thick coniferous forests and plenty of alders. Dense under brush and devils club are very common in lower areas near streams. Old forest fires in the area have created great elk and deer habitat. Plenty of high mountain lakes.
Access
This unit has multiple Forest Service access sites scattered around the unit. Most people access the unit from Forest Service Road 38 on the west side of the reservoir or Forest Service Road 895 east of the reservoir. The best access is by hiking or by horseback. There is great trail access to basins throughout the hunting district. Remote trailheads will lead you into the backcountry and provide more opportunity than the popular trailheads. Private land is at the lower elevations along Highway 2.
Camping and Lodging
Towns close to this hunting district are Hungry Horse, Martin City, Columbia Falls and Coram. Lodging options are readily available in those towns, but can fill up fast during the hunting season. Plenty of camping options along Hungry Horse Reservoir.
