Mostly farmland and prairie pastures, this unit produces many mature bucks every year. Most of them find cover in thousands of acres of timber land and brushy thickets, mostly along rivers and creeks. A majority of the land is private, but there are a few thousand acres of public hunting land and a number of walk-in private lands that are open to the public.

There are some public hunting lands near Cheney Reservoir and Kingman Lake and a fair number of walk-in hunting areas in the northern half of the unit.

This unit is composed of flat land, mostly divided into farms, and rolling hills, which are dry farms or prairie grassland pastures. There are a few steep edges where plains drop off into river bottoms. This unit borders Oklahoma and includes land in Marion, Butler, Cowley, Harvey, Sedgwick, Sumner, Harper, Kingman, Reno, Stafford and Pratt counties. Kingman and Wichita are situated here. Chief waterways are the Arkansas River, Chikaskia River, Argonia Creek and the South Fork of the Ninnescah River, each draining dozens of creeks that meander through the plains and farm land. The largest lake, at 9,550-acres, is Cheney Reservoir. Another lake is Kingman Lake east of Kingman.

A little more than a third of this land is composed of pastures that vary from grassy savannas to upland and cordgrass prairies. Common plants include eastern cordgrass, eastern grama, ironweed, Indian grass, bluestem grasses, buffalo grass, buttonbush and countless wildflowers. More than half of the land is planted in crops, varying from irrigated circular fields to dry farms. Common crops include wheat, sorghum, barley, oats, corn and rye. Wide bands of trees border rivers and large creeks, narrowing along small tributaries and around lakes and ponds. Most trees are blackjack oaks, post oaks, ash, coffee tree, elms, maples, hackberry, walnut, redbuds and cedars.

Rental cabins and campgrounds are at Cheney State Park by Cheney Reservoir and Cheney Wildlife Area. No-fee primitive camping is permitted at Kingman State Fishing Lake, and several cabins are available for rent there. There are private campgrounds in Kingman and Wichita like the Air Capital RV Park and K & R RV Park.

About 5,500 acres of public hunting land comprises Cheney Wildlife Area. Byron Walker Wildlife Area, west of Kingman State Fishing Lake, offers good deer hunting on more than 4,500 acres of public land. Public hunters may hunt at no fee on several private parcels, listed in the Fall Hunting Atlas, which also includes details on state and federal hunting areas. Most good deer hunting areas are leased by outfitters or hunting clubs or reserved for guests of the landowner. Controlled shooting areas, licensed by the state, charge fees for bird hunting although some might allow deer hunting.
