Quick Tips
- Hunting on horseback is a good way to cover land while hunting moose
- Bring a shotgun for hunting grouse
- Fishing is excellent in the Bear River above and below nearby Oneida Reservoir
On The Ground
Stretching south from Soda Springs to Strawberry Canyon, this unit holds a small number of moose. Most moose live in the Caribou Targhee National Forest, but a few are found on the private foothills and stream bottoms on the eastern and western sides of the Bear River Range.
Most hunters can find a mature bull during a long season.
Terrain
This southeastern unit is made up of public and private land between Soda Springs, Strawberry Canyon and Emigration Creek. The higher parts are in the Caribou Targhee National Forest and includes Sherman Peak and Soda Peak. Parts of the range are steep and rugged, including the northwestern edge and the sides of Strawberry, Cheatbeck, Trout Creek and North Ant. Most of the national forest is moderately steep. Flat land is found south of Alexander Reservoir, in the Nounan Valley, in the Gem Valley and from Georgetown Creek to Montpelier in the Bear River Valley.
Roughly 379 square miles
42.1% public land
Elevations from 6,500-9,682 feet
Vegetation
The national forest is largely covered by aspens, Douglas firs, Engelmann and blue spruces, subalpine firs, chokecherry bushes, mahoganies and grasses. The Bear River Range is open in places, with many grassy and brushy meadows scattered in the forest. Foothills are covered with sagebrush, bigtooth maple brush, junipers and scattered conifers and aspens. In late October and November moose are often found in the foothills. Ceanothus is common at high elevations and attracts moose. Moose are often found along creek bottoms that are choked with willows.
Access
Access to national forest and BLM land is good with public roads well-distributed on both sides of the Bear River Range. Access points include McPherson, South Ant, Main, Emigration and Strawberry canyons with forest roads leading to many interior sections. ATVs can be used only on roads that can be used by full-size vehicles.
Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended off paved roads
GPS units with land ownership memory cards are recommended
Hunters can drive on the High Line Trail only to recover game
Camping and Lodging
Hunters can camp on national forest land along four-wheel-drive or gravel roads. Lodging is available in Montpelier and Soda Springs. Developed campgrounds are usually closed before hunting seasons begin. Private campgrounds and RV parks are in Montpelier, Soda Springs and near Lava Hot Springs. Enders Hotel and Museum and Thunder Mountain Lodge can be found in Soda Springs
