This unit can be found on the Snake River around Rigby and has good moose habitat near the Snake River and its south and north forks. Hunters who draw moose tags for this area have to use short-range weapons.
Since this land is mostly flat and has a lot of houses on it, hunters can only use short-range weapons. Good hunt for bulls with spreads of 38-44”
This mostly flat, private area is north and east of Idaho Falls and southwest of Rexburg. Almost the entire unit is less than 5,000 feet above sea level. Parts of Rexburg and Idaho Falls and all of Rigby are here as well as smaller communities like Ucon, Menan and Ririe. Most moose live in sloughs, marshes, woods, willow thickets and stands of brush along the Snake River, the South Fork of the Snake River and the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River.
Cottonwoods, willows, birches, aspens, bulrushes, along with more are the main plants growing in the marshy and wet areas in this unit, like sloughs, creek bottoms, swamps and river bottoms. Junipers grow in some rocky areas with browse plants. The rest of the unit is farmland and pasture land. Farms are planted in alfalfa, grass hay, potatoes, grains and other crops. The northwestern corner a lot of sagebrush-grassland prairie with juniper.
There are a lot of county roads here, but hunters have to get permission to hunt most land. Strips of public land can be found near one or both sides of the Snake River, Henry’s Fork and South Fork, as well around some sloughs and marshes. Some private landowners make their land open to hunters at public access points. The state has arranged to give several public access points near the rivers. Others require hunters to get permission to hunt. Market Lake State Wildlife Management Area is in the northwest corner near Roberts.
Hunters can choose from at least 13 campgrounds in the unit. Most are private, like Western Wings Bird & Clay RV Park. In the southeastern corner, the BLM maintains Kelly’s Island Campground on the bank of the South Fork on Kelly Island Road that branches from East Heise Road.
