This small unit stretches about 16 miles from north to south and 13 miles at its widest point. Hunters have been taking a couple of bull moose each year.
Most hunters fill their tags on bulls ranging from 30-38” in antler width. Logged-over areas provide openings and edges with browse
Mountains, buttes, ridges, long slopes and creeks running in every direction can be found in this unit. The high points in this area are Micky Point, Beaver Butte, Thompson Butte, Dull Axe Mountain, Township Butte, Silver Butte and Bertha Hill. The reservoir is about 1,600 feet above sea level. Roads that form most of the unit boundaries typically run from about 2,500 to 4,000 feet in elevation.
The land is covered in a patchwork of old and new forests, logged areas, meadows and pastures. Forests are full of larches, hemlocks, pines, tamarack, firs, cedars and spruces. Berry bushes, willows, ferns, various forbs, shrubs, saplings and immature trees grow in clearcuts. Some grassy meadows, pastures and a few marches with reeds can also be found here. Willows, brush and trees cover some of the creek bottoms.
A lot of the land here is private, but road access is good. The northern part of the unit is national forest land and some large parcels of state land. Most of the boundaries are Forest Roads 246, 247 and 251. Interior roads climb most ridges and hills.
Some hunters camp along roads in the unit. Campgrounds can be found along Dworshak Reservoir and the North Fork of the Clearwater River. Washington Creek Campground is east of the unit and has 23 campsites. Campgrounds can also be found just south of Headquarters, between Cardiff and Jayne and also west of the Canyon Ranger Station.
