On The Ground

Mule deer, whitetail deer, elk and antelope are hunted in this area that is mainly a mixture of state, BLM and private land that has a lot of winter range north and west of Rexburg. Some hunting permits are sold over the counter and others are issued by lottery.

In years when snowfall is heavy, late seasons produced trophy size mule deer and elk. Hunters who get permission to hunt on private land can enjoy some good hunting for whitetail deer. A few resident deer and elk stay on or near agricultural land and whitetails live on private land along the Henry's Fork of the Snake River.

Terrain

This area has open and easy-to-glass winter range east of Interstate 15 and north and west of Rexburg. Rolling hills in the north and flat croplands in the south and west comprise most of the land. Spencer is at the northeastern corner. The Henry’s Fork passes through the southeast corner. The south and west sides of the unit are mostly agricultural land, which holds most of the resident animals.

  • Roughly 920 square miles

  • 56.4% public land

  • Elevations from 5,000-6,265 feet

Mostly sagebrush country with scattered juniper trees and a few open grassy areas. Along the Henry’s Fork grow cottonwood trees and dense willows along with marsh grasses and crops near the river. Antelope and other game animals find water and feed in the Camas Creek drainage in the central part of the unit.

Hunters with ATVs or four-wheel-drive vehicles have good access to BLM lands via Red Road in the east, Spencer-Kilgore Road in the north, Old Highway 91 in the west and Egin-Hamer Road along with Highway 33 in the south. Many roads on BLM land are primitive two tracks. Access to whitetail hunting along the Henry’s Fork is mainly by landowner permission.

  • Snow and rain can make travel difficult

  • ATVs are not necessary, but speed up travel

  • A GPS with land ownership is recommended

Camping or parking an RV on public land provides quick access to hunting areas. Motels are in Rexburg and St. Anthony. Sand Hills Resort near the St. Anthony Sand Dunes charges for RV parking.
