On The Ground
Mule deer and whitetails are hunted in this area which includes most of Boise and many other communities and is made up of flat prairie and farm land north of the Snake River.
This unit is very different from a typical Western hunting area and looks a lot like parts of the Midwest, but with less high quality deer habitat. Archery and short-range tags are sold over-the-counter. There are controlled short-range deer tags for Deer Flats Refuge.
Terrain
This area is almost entirely flat, consisting of prairies and round alfalfa fields irrigated by center-pivot sprinkler systems with the exception of a few isolated buttes, eroded canyons and draws that drain into the Snake River. The Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area comprises a large part of the unit in the southeast.
Roughly 1,989 square miles
41.3% public land
Elevations from 2,300-3,200 feet
Vegetation
Sagebrush, grasses and shrubs are the main plants found here along with more than a million acres of farm crops. Cottonwoods, willows, some junipers and many species of brush live along the Snake River. Junipers and brush grow along crater edges, uplifts, buttes and along the edges of eroded canyons and draws.
Access
Most of this area is private and hunters need landowner permission to hunt on or cross acres of private land in the western half of the unit around the towns of Boise, Nampa, Caldwell, Meridian, Kuna, Parma, New Plymouth and other communities. A large portion of BLM land is south of New Plymouth and Emmett Valley and has several roads running through it.
The BLM publishes a shooting restriction map online
Four-wheel-drive is recommended on dirt roads in wet weather
ATVs are helpful in some areas
Camping and Lodging
Hunters can camp almost anywhere on BLM land. No fires are allowed on some BLM land except in approved fire rings. Canyon County operates Celebration Park Campground in Melba. A lot of private campgrounds and RV parks are found in the many towns in this unit like Hi-Valley RV Park in Eagle. Hunters can find motel and bed and breakfast lodging in many towns, including Hat Ranch Winery bed and breakfast in Caldwell.
