On The Ground

This area is also known as the Dworshak Elk Management Zone and has good numbers of elk, whitetail and low numbers of mule deer.

This unit has mixed land ownership. A lot of roads, ATV trails and over-the-counter deer and elk tags result in crowded hunting sometimes. There are not a lot of mule deer here.

Terrain

A lot of low mountains and shallow creek drainages in Shoshone, Idaho and Clearwater counties from the Clearwater River near Kooskia up north to Castle Rock and Goat Mountain in Shoshone County. Terrain changes are not typically abrupt although some drainages have steep sides. Most of the land is heavily forested, but there are a lot of clearcuts that are in various stages of regrowth. Mountains, buttes, ridges, long slopes and creeks run in every direction. Clearcuts can be found throughout the unit, and many of them have grown in with tall trees, but many are still open, grassy and brushy.

  • Roughly 1,556 square miles

  • 50.7% public land

  • Elevations from 1,800-6,800 feet

Forests are densely timbered by mature evergreens like larch, hemlock, pines, tamarack, firs, cedars and spruces. Berry bushes, willows, ferns, various forbs and shrubs as well as saplings and immature trees grow in clearcuts.

With mixed land ownership, a lot of roads, ATV trails and over-the-counter deer and elk tags, this area attracts a lot of hunters. Some roads are controlled by private timber companies, but landowners usually give permission to hunters. A lot of old and new logging roads give access to most parts of this unit.

Hunters can camp almost anywhere in the national forest. Washington Creek Campground is east of the unit and has 23 campsites. Campgrounds are south of Headquarters and between Cardiff, Jayne and west of the Canyon Ranger Station near Fern Ridge off of the northeastern corner of the unit. The Outback in Pierce offers cabins for rent. Pioneer Inn in Pierce was remodeled in 2013. Some hunters camp along dirt roads. If you have permission to hunt on private land, be sure you can also camp. Some campgrounds can be found along Dworshak Reservoir.
