On The Ground
West of Interstate 25 and between the towns of Palmer Lake and Centennial are herds of elk and mule deer on both private and public land. Rampart Range runs through the middle of the unit with elevations above 8,000 feet.
Terrain
The Rampart Mountains runs through the middle of this unit. Distinctive mesas and buttes are visible along Interstate 25 corridor such as Thunder, Dawson and Raspberry Butte. Canyons and creeks flow out of the Rampart Range unto rolling prairie.

Vegetation
Mountain shrubs such as oak brush, mountain mahogany and bitter bush merge with rolling open grasslands that lead up to large stands of ponderosa pines. The numerous creek bottoms are lined with cottonwoods and willows. There may be some stands of aspen at the higher elevations.
Access
Pike National Forest with 24,000 acres and main access off of Rampart Range Road that goes from outside Sedalia to Manitou Springs, some 50 miles along the crest of the range. There are a few sections of state trust land and state wildlife areas. Sometimes public access is restricted to day use only and access is permitted by foot only.
Camping and Lodging
Pikes Peak National Forest allows dispersed camping close to Forest Service roads. There are developed campgrounds at Devils Head off Rampart Range Road, Jackson Creek on Forest Service Road 502, Flat Rocks on Flat Rock Road, Indian Creek Horse and Indian Creek on Colorado Route 67 west of Sedalia.
Chatfield State Park has over 197 campsites from RV hook ups to tent only designated sites, located off of Colorado Route 121
