Recently reemerging as one of the West’s top destinations for trophy mule deer, Wyoming should not be overlooked by serious mule deer hunters. Miles of public land provide the opportunity to pursue mule deer in the early fall in high country with a rifle or bow. Some areas will let hunters hunt bucks in November during the rut. Limited entry areas are available to draw, as well as nonresident general regions that have a lot of individual areas. Some of the better areas and regions will provide an opportunity to hunt bucks reaching over 180” Boone and Crockett. Most areas around the state are capable of producing a buck scoring more than 160” B&C. In addition to the mountain areas along the western side of the state, there are huge expanses of high desert and creek drainages that also hold mule deer. Some areas can be drawn by nonresidents with minimal preference points. Resident applicants do not have preference points, and tags for individual areas are drawn at random by residents. Winter mortality can be an issue in Wyoming concerning mule deer, but recent years have allowed for a good winter survival rate.
