Like a lot of surrounding states in the northwest, Washington is on a historical downtrend with its mule deer herds. Still, in the right areas, hunters can find good success and will occasionally turn up big mature bucks. Mule deer hunting is conducted on the eastern two-thirds of the state while a closely related species, the Columbian Blacktail, is found on the western edge of the state. Hunters can purchase over-the-counter tags for all weapon types for mule deer that generally occur pre-rut, while many special permits allow hunting during the rut.
** Units listed below may not have a current hunt for this species. Units in this table are included if a significant part of the unit is found within the county.
