Utah imported mountain goats in 1967, releasing them on Lone Peak near Salt Lake City in the Wasatch Range, where the first hunt was held in 1981. Since then, biologists have transplanted animals into other parts of the Wasatch, Uinta, Tushar and La Sal mountains. The introductions have been highly successful with animals numbering more than 2,000 and filling habitat in some areas. In the past five years, the state has distributed more than 100 tags a year, reporting hunter success rates of more than 90%. Some units are in rugged, remote terrain that requires a hunter to backpack, while hunters can drive all the way up to high-altitude goat terrain in some units, such as Beaver and Willard Peak.
