Rocky Mountain Sheep where found in Utah in the early 19th century but soon disappeared. State officials succeeded in starting herds in several areas, including the Uinta Mountains, Canyons along the Green River, mountains near Flaming Gorge Reservoir, parts of the Wasatch Range, two islands of the Great Salt Lake and two northwestern mountain ranges. Domestic sheep grazing has been eliminated in some areas, allowing room for wild sheep to thrive. The state has spent a great deal of money to transplant herds to various parts of the state and to monitor them. Utah officials do not recognize a difference between California and Rocky Mountain bighorns, but the herds on Stansbury Island and the Newfoundland Mountains are considered to be of the California bighorn race. A hunter is limited to drawing one tag in a lifetime, regardless of whether it’s for one of these three areas or a unit with Rockies.
