Montana has a lot of habitat that is ideal for Shiras Moose. Moose are found throughout the entire western portion of the state, but moose numbers are not high in all hunt districts. Predators and the loss of habitat are both a challenge to the future of Shiras Moose in Montana. Successful moose hunters will need to have the ability to spend several days afield, and patience along with hard work will be involved in harvesting a trophy moose. The chance of harvesting a big bull does exist, but most mature bulls have antler spreads that are 35-40”. There is also a decent chance to surpass the magical 40” mark in Montana.
Most of the moose country will offer good public access with some road systems that will get you close enough to hunt. With long season dates you can select to take advantage of the rut in late September or hunt in the end of November and plan to to chase bulls in the snow. Either will be an adventure.
