Overlooked by many mule deer hunters, Kansas produces some big bucks because the state controls the yearly harvest through a limit on the number of rifle tags. Additionally, most of Kansas in comprised of private land and deer can avoid most hunters and grow to mature ages and size. Bucks in the 170s and 180s are taken regularly in both the western and eastern mule deer zones, which together take up roughly the western half of the state.
Rifle hunting is limited to residents except for direct descendants of landowner-tenants and their spouses and for holders of a select few so-called governor’s tags, which are made available to the winners of auctions or raffles. Landowner-tenants with “hunt-own-land” tags are restricted to their own property.
Nonresidents may hunt with a muzzleloader or bow and arrow but only after drawing a whitetail archery or muzzleloader tag and then drawing a mule deer stamp. The draw odds on the mule deer stamps are slim which will ultimately cause a lot of hopeful applicants to look into other states.
