Roosevelt elk are the largest species of elk still found in North America with mature bulls weighing 700 to a reported 1,300 pounds. Their antlers are often correspondingly heavy and carry extra crown points. Roosevelt elk populations have been on a steady incline in California for the last two decades, thanks to the great management and recovery plans from the CDF&W. There are 3 elk zones that you can hunt Roosevelts in; Marble Mountains, Northwestern, and Siskiyou. All located on the Oregon border, the Marble Mountains offers the best trophy potential. The permits are extremely limited, but there have been several 6, 7 and 8 point bulls harvested in recent years.
** Zones listed below may not have a current hunt for this species. Zones in this table are included if any part of the zone is found within the county.
