When it comes to black bear hunting, most people don’t think of California. There are actually two subspecies of black bear in the state. The Northwestern Black Bear and the California Black bear, they are split by the Klamath Mountain range and are nearly impossible to differentiate between the two. There has been an increasing population for the last 25 years. Black bear hunting is more of an opportunity hunt, you’re not allowed to bait or use dogs to hunt them. The vegetation that they inhabit is extremely thick and dense making it difficult to hunt them.
