If you plan on applying for one of Washington’s special hunt permits, you now have a bit more time. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has extended the application deadline until midnight on May 22. This is to allow for the distribution and review of the printed copies of the 2024 Big Game Hunting Seasons and Regulations pamphlet, which should be available at vendors and WDFW offices very soon, according to a news release.
“We have heard feedback from many hunters that the original deadline did not provide enough time to reference a physical copy of the latest big game hunting regulations before the special hunt permit application deadline,” said Anis Aoude, WDFW game division manager. “We understand that being able to reference the physical document while you fill out your web application can be helpful. We hope this extended deadline provides everyone ample opportunity to submit their applications.”
Special hunt permits allow hunters to hunt during special times or on places only authorized by that permit. This usually means less hunting pressure and a higher rate of success. Details on how to apply for these special permits are available right here.
In order to apply for a deer or elk special permit, you must buy a hunting license and specify which tag you want. Then, you apply with your preferred hunt choices. Those who want to hunt mountain goat, moose or bighorn sheep are not required to buy a hunting license prior to applying.
You can check your WILD account in June to see if you were lucky enough to draw a special hunt permit.
Good luck!
