Seven elk poached h1

Know anything about seven elk illegally shot and left to rot near Craig, Colorado? Colorado Parks and Wildlife wants you to contact them.

According to the agency, a concerned citizen reported the dead elk on Sunday, Nov. 22. Upon investigation, officers discovered all seven elk in close proximity to one another on BLM land. The poaching incident likely occurred on Friday, Nov. 20.

“We have processed the scene and gathered forensic evidence,” said Mike Swaro, Assistant Area Wildlife Manager. “We are hopeful that anyone who was around the location late last week can provide us with information about vehicles or people who may have been in that area. Even little things can become the clues that will find those responsible.”

The elk were found northeast of the intersection at Moffat County Roads 109 and 3.

"Even little things can become clues that will find those responsible," said Swaro.

Investigators hope that someone saw something suspicious and will call the Operation Game Thief hotline at 877-265-6648.

“This was not hunting,” said Swaro. “This was a poaching. Colorado law requires that a hunter prepare any harvested animal for human consumption, meaning you have to take the meat. To just leave these animals in the field is illegal and unethical and it takes from all of us.”

This is really disgusting and what continues to give hunting a bad rep. The laws need to be changed to make these incidents severely punishable. Pain is usually a motivator

This makes me sick. For someone who has lived in CO my entire life it pains me to read articles like this and know there are people in this state doing this. I hope the guilty individual/s are found and punished to an extreme
