How are gray wolves faring in the Centennial State? This week, Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW) released its first annual report on gray wolves, which is for the biological year April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024. The next report will cover April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025.
“A successful reintroduction effort requires collaboration,” said CPW Director Jeff Davis. “This report provides a great summary of both the work our agency is doing, but also how we’re working with other agencies like the Colorado Department of Agriculture to assist agricultural producers in reducing wolf-livestock depredations.”
The report covers the status of gray wolves, wolf management, monitoring, research, education and outreach, according to KJCT Channel 8 News.
As a result of the voter-approved reintroduction effort, CPW released 12 wolves into the state originally from Oregon. However, it hasn’t been smooth sailing – with the agency already relocating problem wolves after repeat livestock depredation.
The restoration effort will continue despite the relocation, and CPW anticipates releasing an additional 10 to 15 wolves per year in areas west of the Continental Divide.
