We're already knocking on the door for the 2023 application season! It's hands down one of my favorite times of the year. Researching hunts on Insider is an absolute treat, and the next seven months are going to be spent pouring over data and looking at maps hard trying to find some places I'd love to check out.
What follows is going to be an extremely early look at all the upcoming 2023 Western hunting application open dates, deadlines, as well as a points-only purchase deadlines. Note: again, like every year, this early version is mainly “tentative” dates at this time. I like to explain this early look in terms of sports analysts and their way too early rankings of sports teams. Only this is hunting and more important! This article will be updated very frequently once states release additional concrete dates. Dates that are already approved for 2023 are marked "Approved," and dates that are tentative are marked at "Tentative."
Keep in mind... to make things easy on myself, I could just give rough dates in terms of "early March" for a state's deadline... but that's not the way I do things. So what you see here is the best of my ability to give you the most accurate tentative dates so you can start to plan.
Updates to the application deadline calendar below will be made very frequently as states release information.
Just like in years past, I always try to modify or add features to this article. I read every bit of feedback from Insiders on the old articles (I greatly appreciate the feedback). So, for 2023, I moved away from the dynamic table that allowed you to search for items and narrow it down to just one state. It seems some people had difficulty loading the dynamic tables on their devices. For 2023, I also added the times for the application open dates and application deadlines.
Note: The other table that I include in this article every year about tentative draw results dates will be published for each western state later in 2023.
In the tables below, you will find the approved and tentative 2023 state application open dates and deadlines. As mentioned earlier in this article, these dates will be modified as each state releases more information. Currently, they are based on previous years' deadlines/results by looking at what day of the week they are typically released or even the exact calendar date they tend to follow. And sometimes, unfortunately, there is no pattern, so I'm left to really analyze prior-year deadlines or even go off some of the deadlines for last year. But in my opinion, these deadlines are very close to what they will be until each state lists its approved regulations.
The table below shows states that either have a separate points-only purchase period and also includes states that you must purchase points during the draw.
